The Arab Open University (AOU) and The Open University (OU) have announced the establishment of a hardship fund of £100,000 for Palestinian students from Gaza and Lebanon to support them in completing their studies with the AOU.
The AOU and OU have established that 1,583 Palestinian students are studying with the AOU in Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with more than 400 from Gaza. As the ongoing conflict is causing extreme hardship for Palestinian students, the OU and the AOU have each committed £50,000 towards the fund for immediate disbursement to help students to complete their studies.
Professor Mohamed Al-Zakri, President at Arab Open University, said:
This partnership exemplifies the shared commitment of AOU and OU to supporting students in need. By establishing this hardship fund, we are extending a lifeline to those facing extraordinary challenges, empowering them to continue their education and work toward a brighter future. Together, we are making a meaningful impact on their lives and their communities.
The fund will be managed and distributed through the AOU with clear criteria for awarding and disbursement on the basis of need via specially set up committees in each region. Palestinian and Lebanese students studying with the AOU who are experiencing hardship or difficulty can seek assistance by contacting The Student Affairs Department at the Arab Open University.
